History of the original 5th Missouri

The 5th Missouri Infantry Regiment began confederate service as the 2nd Missouri Infantry Battalion.  Organized with seven companies from Missouri State Guard troops on January 28, 1862.  The 2nd Missouri Infantry Battalion was first commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James McCown with Robert S. Bevier as Major.  Their first assignment was with Slack's Brigade, Confederate Volunteers, Missouri State Guard, Trans-Mississippi District, Department #2 (January-March 1862).  As part of Slack's Brigade they fought in the battle of Elk Horn Tavern (Pea Ridge) on March 7-8, 1862.  They were next assigned to Greene's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi District, Department #2 (March-April 1862).  They crossed the Mississippi River into Tennessee in April and served with Greene's Brigade, Army of the West, Department #2 (April-May 1862).  

In May three companies were added and the 2nd Missouri Infantry Battalion was designated the 5th Missouri Infantry Regiment with James McCown as Colonel, Robert S. Bevier as Lieutenant Colonel, and Owen A. Waddell as Major.  Their first assignment was with Little's-Gates' Brigade, Price's-Little's Division, Army of the West (May-July 1862) where they served in the Corinth Campaign (April-June 1862).  Their next assignment was with Gates' Brigade, Little's-Hébert's-Green's Division, Price's Corps, Army of West Tennessee, Department #2 (July-October 1862) where they fought at Iuka September 19, 1862, and Corinth October 3-4 1862.  

Their next assignment was to Green's Brigade, Bowen's Division, Price's Corps, Army of West Tennessee, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana.  They were next assigned to the Missouri Brigade, Bowen's Division, Price's Corps, Army of West Tennessee, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana (November-December 1862).  Their next assignment was with The Missouri Brigade, Bowen's Division, 2nd Corps, Army of North Mississippi, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana (December 1862-1863).  Their Next assignment was with the Missouri Brigade, Price's Division, Army of The Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana (January-February 1863).  

Their Next assignment was with the Missouri Brigade, Forney's-Bowen's Division, 2nd Military District (February-April 1863) where they fought at the battle of Grand Gulf on March 9, 1863, and Port Gibson.  Their next assignment was with the Missouri Brigade, Bowen's Division, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana (April-July 1863) where they fought in the Vicksburg Campaign (May-July 1863), The Battles of Champions Hill (May 16, 1863), Big Black River Bridge (May 17, 1863), and The Siege of Vicksburg (May 17,1863).

Their Next assignment was with the Missouri Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana (November-December 1863).  They were then assigned to The Missouri Brigade, Department of the Gulf (January-February 1864).  They were then assigned to the Missouri Brigade, French's Division, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana (February-May 1864), where they fought in the Meridian Campaign (February-March 1864.

Their next assignment was with the Missouri Brigade, French's Division, Army of Mississippi (May-July 1864), where they fought in the Atlanta Campaign (May-September 1864), In the Battles of Lattimer's Mills (June 20, 1864), Kennesaw Mountain (June 27, 1864), Atlanta Siege (July-September 1864), and Jonesboro (August 31-September 1, 1864).  They were next assigned to The Missouri Brigade, French's Division, Stewart's Corps, Army of Tennessee (July 1864-January 1865) for the battles of Lovejoy's station (September 2-5, 1864), Allatoona (October 5, 1864), and Franklin (November 30, 1864).

Their next Assignment was with The Missouri Brigade, French's Division, District of the Gulf, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana (February-April 1865) for the battles of Mobile (March 17- April 12, 1865), and Fort Blakely (April 1-9, 1865).  And their last assignment was with the Missouri Brigade, French's Division, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana (April 1865).
